It has been eight years when I graduated from college. I took up Political Science because of the childhood dream of becoming a lawyer. I was young and idealistic during the time, I have the notion that, it was the appropriate pre-law degree. But I never got the chance to enter law school. I shifted career path and got into teaching, later I have realized the calling within me. I could still remember the best subjects and topics that we debated within the confines of our classroom. One of my favorite is the case analysis on the issue of citizenship.
Here is the simple issue of citizenship:
Spratly Islands is a contested territory within the South China Sea, with six countries claiming jurisdiction including the Philippines. Mr. X, an American and Mrs. Y a Filipina, the survivors of the passenger vessel Titanic that sunk during the devastation of the super typhoon Kiko stranded in the island.
The two survivors stuck in the island for years and romantic relationship blossom between them. This paved the way for the giving birth of Mrs Y to Baby Boy Z.
Nevertheless, the issue of Spratly Islands remain unsettled and pending before the International Court. That Mr. X and Mrs. Y has to resolve the citizenship issue of their Baby Boy Z.
Should Baby Boy Z accorded with the status of a stateless person? What is the citizenship of Baby Boy Z? What principle that governs citizenship is applicable to the case?
